EXCLUSIVE: Porter Block on his new podcast, premieres 2 songs via No Place Like Long Island
No Place Like Long Island is proud to present two songs from the not-yet-released Team Mensch title Primer from the New York-based Porter Block:
"Always Right" and "So Mean" date back to 2005. I was obviously in the throws of conflict because both songs try to take delight and humor in what is obviously a conflict-ridden back story to each song. Neither made it to record because they were both a little out of our comfort zone.
"Always Right" has some humorous progressive rock guitar riffs and influence from Rush, who Caleb [Sherman] and I adore and have listened to since we were kids. "So Mean" takes some production cues from some big hip-hop tracks at the time but is really a Jekyll and Hyde story about a nasty guy a la "Mean Mr. Mustard."
Porter Block, a part-time Southampton resident with Long Beach roots, is also in the midst of launching the In A State podcast:
It is a podcast about music for people who love music. It's probably the most fun I've had in the business in 20 years. I get the opportunity to sit with and chat with industry people, musicians , producers, marketing and industry folks and really get to dig in a little more behind the music and the typical Wikipedia back story or promotional plug.
There a lot of mystery behind the creative process of writing , recording and selling music for a living. In A State attempts to unveil the pretense of selling, and tries to break down each individual process an artist or a producer or entertainment executive needs to go through to be successful at what they do, which is often elusive even to them. It's an intimate discussion about the creativity, inspiration, and ambiguity of music.
Rumored guests for In A State include Bar/None Records' Glenn Morrow, The Syndicate's Jeff Kilgour, singer/songwriter Willie Nile, producer/artist Andrew Horowitz, and Analog Spark founder Mark Piro.
